Down High School took on the YENI Big Market...with a little help from Somerville! Young Enterprise Northern Ireland hosted its annual Big Market again this year at Belfast’s historic St. George’s Market.
Somerville were delighted to get directly involved by mentoring students from Down High School in Downpatrick. Head of Operations, David McCann has been meeting the students on a weekly basis, providing them with business advice and mentorship as they embark on a journey of creating their own company, with sustainability at its core.
The initial business idea was to manufacture phone, watch and airpod holders using recycled timber. They are also upcycling timber products that would otherwise have been destined for woodchip. Somerville are assisting by providing material directly from our sustainable recycling business.
On 7th December the students took their business, ‘TimberTech’, to the public for the first time, showcasing their talent in design, manufacturing, and marketing with the hope of making sales and competing for the coveted Best Company award.
Open to the public, the Big Market was a high-energy market with music, refreshments, and prizes to be won throughout. The local students received lots of support and enjoyed their chance of being Northern Ireland’s newest young entrepreneurs!
